Part 2 Analysis

After considering my contextual review, I decided that it would be within my best interest to attempt and branch out in terms of practice and work on something completely separate. I am a lot more interested in creating, than shooting at the moment. I was deeply inspired by the themes of my body politics project in part 2 and wished to continue on with concepts of Irish nationality. The political themes of the project interested me yet I wanted to deal with the spiritual and historical implications of being Irish and a celebration of our land and heritage.

I Aim, in this project, to develop a visual language for this generation of Irish youth, particularly queer Irish youth. Creating a community for us and a language from which we can continue to build on top of.

My body politics project dealt a lot with England's relationship with Ireland. Ireland's history and heritage has often been silence and erased by Britain through clever ethnic cleansing tactics. Starting with erasing out language and then our culture. Around 1910-1920 revival began to bring back our culture and traditions. Want to invoke another revival for Ireland, redefining Ireland and its image in internal and external and audiences. Recently, Saint Patrick's Day has inspired me to think about how Ireland is seen in a foreign audience. Mainly its associations with alcoholism and the colour green. While Ireland is a man exporter of alcohol namely Dennis, it should not be what defines us to a fire and hurricanes. Furthermore the colour green, is associated with Ireland because of its farming traditions. Grass is not a native species to Ireland, it was brought in by the British during the Ulster plantations when Northern Ireland was used to grow crops such as flaxseeds.

Many indigenous species were killed by the British to make way for fields for agriculture. This agriculture did not benefit the Irish people, and rather benefited our British neighbours. In fact, we were so non-bio diverse that we solely had the potato to live off of . This led to the famine in 1849 which led to a mass Immigration and a large killing of many many Irishmen. Many Englishmen saw this as gods way of eradicating the Irish ethnic group so that they could use the land for themselves, they found entitled to the land belonged to us. I want to redefine islands as an uncolonised utopia of biodiversity. The first step of this would be to redefine Ireland as not just the Emerald Isle but an island full of colour.

I am very inspired by the Boglands of Ireland which, for the most part have remained untouched by Britain. Cromwell famously said 'to Hell or to Connaught' because the land of connaught was so poor due to its many Boglands. The colour scheme of the Boglands is very unique to Ireland, with many purples, red, yellows and ochres living there. Boglands and marshes are a haven for biodiversity as well, with a lot of native flora and fauna surviving there.

Like the biodiversity of the bargains and marshes, so two is the diverse itty of the Irish use particularly in the queer community. I would like to highlight and Bring to light the similarities between the Irish landscape and the queer community, drying them together and creating a new visual language where the quick community can express themselves using earth tones and bogland imagery.
